Keenan McCardell had a 75-yard touchdown reception in the 1st quarter. |
When Brad Johnson had a pass bounced off Michael Pittman and intercepted by 49er's cornerback Ahmed Plummer on the game's second play, you could tell that things weren't going to go the Buccaneers' way. The 49ers physically dominated the Buccaneers for four quarters last Sunday earning a 24 to 7 victory.
Keenan McCardell's 75-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter was the only positive experience of the game for the Buccaneers. The Bucs offense never really threatened to score the rest of the game. I was very concerned with the play calling for most of the game. It looked to me like it was the Pittman show. What was Gruden thinking? The Bucs only threw the ball to Keyshawn Johnson a few times during the game. You have to get the ball to your playmakers and let them make plays. I watched the 49ers throw the ball to Terrell Owens on half a dozen occasions when he wasn't open and Owens had to make a play on the ball. In the second quarter, Owens cashed in on a short crossing pass and took it to the house for a 75-yard touchdown. If you don't try to get the ball to Keyshawn at least 8 to10 times a game we're going to struggle in more games.
The Bucs defense also looked bad for most of the game. Yes I know the defense is dealing with a lot of injuries, but the backup players have to step up and make plays. Monte Kiffin and the rest of the defensive staff have to make sure the backups are ready to play and fully understand their roles. I can't believe the 49ers took it to the Bucs defense for the whole game and played a more physical game. When the defense looks at the tapes of this game they aren't going to like what they see. This defense has too much pride to let this happen for two games in a row. They will get it together and look for the defense to try and make a statement next week against Dallas.
The Buccaneers are looking to put this game behind them as soon as possible and Sunday cannot come fast enough. Let's hope Gruden's streak of not losing two games in a row continues. The Bucs play the Dallas Cowboys at Raymond James Stadium and the hometown fans sure would like to see a win after the two overtime losses they have seen this year. The Cowboys bringing a 5-1 record with them that is somewhat suspect when looking at the records of the teams they have beaten. Needless to say, the Tuna is sure to bring a good game plan with them and give the Bucs all they can handle. My prediction in overtime Buccaneers 24, Cowboys 21.
