Vanderjagt makes overtime field goal to beat Buccaneers 38 to 35. |
With 5 minutes and 9 seconds left in the game, Martin Gramatica kicked an extra point to cap off a Ronde Barber 29 yard interception return for a touchdown to make the score Tampa Bay 35, Indianapolis 14. It was one of the most dominating performances the Bucs have turned in this year. Keenan McCardell had one of the best games of his career scoring on a 74-yard touchdown pass in the 1st quarter and a 15-yard touchdown reception in the 3rd quarter. He also had a remarkable 57 yard fumble return for a touchdown in the 1st quarter that will surely go down as one of Monday Night Football's most remarkable plays. I'm sure ABC had already cut out McCardell's picture from the Monday Night Football horse trailer as player of the game. With just about 5 minutes left in the game and the Bucs with a 21-point lead, most of the fans started exiting Raymond James Stadium to return to their homes. What happened in those last 5 minutes was a once in a lifetime event. Never before in the history of football had a team come back from 21 points down to win the game with that little time left. To make this feat even more impressive, it was done against the league's best defense and the defending Super Bowl champs. After the Bucs took the lead at 35 to 14, on the ensuing kickoff, Indianapolis return man Pyatt returned the kick 90 yards to the Tampa Bay 12 yard line. Shortly after that James Mungro scored on a 3-yard touchdown run, trimming Tampa Bay's lead to 35 to 21. On the next kickoff, Indianapolis recovered an onside kick and quickly scored a touchdown with an 11 yard pass to Marvin Harrison making the score 35 to 28. The Colts scored two touchdowns in about a minute and ten seconds, leaving 2 ½ minutes in the game. After stopping Tampa Bay on their next possession, Payton Manning shredded the Bucs' defense on a 5 play, 85-yard drive that culminated in a 52-yard pass to Marvin Harrison, which sent the game into overtime.
The Bucs won the toss in overtime, but were unable to sustain a drive and had to punt to the Colts. Indianapolis took the ball downfield in 14 plays, totaling 76 yards ending in a 29 yard Vanderjagt field goal, winning the game. Indianapolis wins 38 to 35. The fans in the stadium left dejected. Many fans that left early were in disbelief as they listened to the game unfold on their car radios. On Tuesday morning, Tampa fans woke up wondering if it was all a bad dream. Did the Bucs really blow a 21-point lead with less than 5 minutes left in the game? Yes, they did, leaving one to ponder how did this happen? You can't point to just one thing that led to this loss. The major factors were for one, poor special teams, first allowing a 90-yard kickoff return and then on the next play allowing an onside kick. This is unacceptable. Another is Monty Kiffen deciding to play prevent defense, which everybody knows prevents you from winning. Jon Gruden trying to run out the clock instead of attacking the Colts with his offense like he did for most of the game. Even the refs got in on it when in overtime they called Simeon Rice for jumping, which gave Vanderjagt a second chance at a field goal he had just missed to win the game. As the saying goes, "you win as a team and you lose as a team" and we sure lost as a team.
Like most of the Tampa Bay area, the Bucs want to put this game behind them as soon as possible. I feel sorry for the Washington Redskins who the Bucs are sure to take out their frustrations on. Tampa Bay will bounce back from this performance. My prediction is Tampa Bay 24, Washington 17.
