The Blackshirts record another sacks bringing this year's total to 39. |
The Huskers lose the third game of the last three they have played. In all three loses the opponent has jumped on the Blackshirts early and this game was no different. The Sooners drove the ball down the field on their first drive that ended with a RB Adrian Peterson 36 yard touchdown run. From that point on, the Huskers were playing catch up and made a good effort but came up short losing 24 to 31.
It's hard when you have been a fan of the Huskers your whole life and you're not used to seeing them lose this many games in a year. This is a young team trying to learn a new offense and to be perfectly honest with you we still don't have all the pieces. On offense we are still in need of a few good linemen. I'm asking Santa for a good Left Tackle. We are still in need of a good catching tight end and a couple of receivers with speed to stretch the defense. It may take 1 or 2 more good recruiting classes to make this offense run the way it needs to. On the defensive side of the ball, we have to improve in the secondary. We are in desperate need of a shut down corner, two would even be better.
QB Zac Taylor has really shown everyone how tough he is with the pounding he has taken in the last two games. Oklahoma sacked Taylor 9 times this game. This type of punishment is sure to take its toll if we don't do a better job protecting the quarterback. I would hate to burn a red shirt on QB Harrison Beck if Taylor gets hurt late in the season. Taylor on the day completed 25 of 42 passing for 249 yards and a pair of touchdowns and interceptions. RB Cory Ross threw an 18 yard TD pass late in the fourth quarter for the Huskers' final score. Once again, WR Nate Swift had a good game catching 9 passes for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns.
The Blackshirts just aren't getting the job done. It seems to be a combination of lack of talent and depth in the secondary and poor game preparation and signal calling. It's painfully obvious to anyone with a TV set how predictable the Blackshirts' defense is. It seems like they are playing a prevent defense for most of the game. We're not getting many turnovers and none in this game. Coach Kevin Cosgrove has been out coached in the last few games and doesn't seem to be able to make the proper adjustments. This needs to improve or he may lose the confidence of his defense like he did last year.
One bright spot is that the Huskers' special teams have been good all year. During the Oklahoma game, they blocked a 35 yard field goal attempt. We play a lot of backup players on special teams that seem promising for the future.
The Huskers have another road game next weekend as they travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the Jayhawks. The Jayhawks haven't beaten the Huskers since 1968, so this year shouldn't be any different. Remember this isn't your father's Huskers team. Huskers win a closely contested game 24 to 17.
